More than 50 University of Tasmania students took on real-world energy challenges at the inaugural Hackathon delivered in partnership with TasNetworks, The University of Tasmania and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Students worked in teams to develop technology solutions to real-world energy challenges, with the winning team earnt themselves paid internship opportunities at TasNetworks.

When Abir arrived in Tasmania in 2024, he was beginning a new degree in a new place.
Two years later, the University of Tasmania student has been named Technology Industry Rising Star at the 2026 TasICT Excellence Awards
“I am incredibly honoured,” Abir said. “When I arrived in Tasmania in 2024, much of what I have achieved over the past two years felt impossible.
“This award belongs to the people who supported me along the way, and it has made me even more motivated to contribute to the Tasmanian community and the technology sector.”
His win led a strong night for the University, with students, staff and industry partners recognised across several categories, read more below

A new paid pathway is set to make it easier to change careers and become a teacher in Tasmania.
The Change2Teaching program is offering 40 places across the North West and South
On completion of the program, participants will secure permanent positions, supporting growth in teacher numbers across the state.
Applications are open now and close on 30 August.
